A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
