The nation's top prosecutor stated that Maduro and his wife are subject to indictments in a New York court, encompassing conspiracy related to drug terrorism, cocaine importation, and firearms offenses. "The defendants will shortly confront the full weight of US law on US territory," the statement continued. It finished by commending the commander-in-chief for demanding justice and thanking the courageous military for a successful operation.
"Maduro is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela... Maduro is the head of a drug trafficking organization... and he is under indictment for pushing drugs into the United States," said the US Secretary of State.
The US Vice-President supported this sentiment, saying that the administration had presented multiple opportunities for de-escalation but was clear that narco-terrorism must cease. "Maduro is the newest person to find out that President Trump keeps his word," the remarks added.
Opposition Criticism: Charges of Lying and Militarism
Conversely, Democratic reaction was swift and scathing. Lawmakers charged the White House of turning an counter-drug operation into a regime-change action.
