Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
